Procedure to Change Your Course/Programme

You must fulfill all the requirements of your study permit before switching schools or programmes. As a result, you must be:

• Enrolled at a designated learning institution (DLI) and
• Actively studying while you’re in Canada

You must get in touch with us if you:

• Are you a post-secondary student switching course and programs in Candian Universities & Colleges?
• Do you need to modify the terms of your study permission?
• Do you have a co-op work permit but have switched Universities & Colleges?

We might need you to confirm that you are a student.

We may send you an email if you have study permission. The email will include the “@cic.gc.ca” sign at the end. You must comply with the directions in the email by the deadline to verify that you are registered and actively pursuing a course of study in Canada.

Seamless Transitions: How to Navigate the Process of Switching Universities & Colleges

Your former colleges & Universities will note that you are not currently enrolled in classes. If this occurs:

You may be ordered to leave the country for violating the terms of your study permit, which could make it impossible for you to return to Canada in the future.
For instance, you might not receive a subsequent study or work permit approval.

• You are not abiding by the terms of your study permission.
• You can be requested to leave the nation.
• You might be discouraged from visiting Canada as a result of this.
• For instance, you might not receive a subsequent study or work permit approval.

Moving To The Next Education Level

If you are switching school levels while your study permission is still in effect, there is no need to make any changes or submit an application for a new permit. This might be:

• Preschool to High School
• From Secondary to Post Secondary
• Secondary Education to high school or
• Any Other Transition between grade levels
• You must submit an extension request if your study permit is about to expire.

If your permit has already run out, you must reestablish your student status concurrently with your application to extend your study permit. Within 90 days of losing your status, you must submit an application to regain it. You cannot resume or continue your studies until you are once again registered as a student and we have renewed your study permit.
